Musings from Gameweek 13
The Costly Capitulate
With Van Persie failing to score at home against QPR, Suarez not delivering, and Cazorla, Ba, Mata, and Tevez all kept quiet, the expensive stars of the Fantasy League had a dour Gameweek.
The average score was 39 points, reflecting the lack of points from the heavily owned players. The highest score was by a lifeless Gomez-owning Fantasy manager, captaining Liverpool’s Johnson.
Thankfully for those of us that had miserable Gameweek the early Tuesday and Wednesday Gameweek 14 offers chance of redemption. Don’t lose faith just yet. Hang on to those elites and hope for better returns
True to form, Hughton has quietly transformed the leaky Norwich team to an organized and resolute defensive machine. The Canaries have kept three clean sheets in their last four and haven’t conceded more than a single goal in all competitions since early October.
Their budget defenders will attract many suitors in the coming Gameweeks with Javier Garrido having already risen in price to 4.7, surpassing Bassong (4.5). Turner’s shoulder injury means Whittaker is a budget pick at 4.3 and Ryan Bennet a possible cut-price option at 3.9.
Contrary to Norwich, Stoke’s resolute defence is expected. They have conceded an impressive 0.17 goals per game at the Brittania, having kept four consecutive clean sheets.
Having such an established defence, Stoke’s defenders are more expensive, especially after the loss of both Wilson and Wilkinson to injury. Huth, at 5.5, offers a history of attacking returns, Shawcross a guaranteed starting spot for 5.3, and Cameron the cheapest route to the defence at 4.7.
Begovic is an expensive goalkeeping option, having risen from 4.5 to 5.2 since Gameweek 7.
The most exciting team in the Premier League, with goals guaranteed every game. The last two Gameweeks, the goals have come at the right end for Adkins’s team with five goals in back-to-back wins.
Southampton offer a plethora of options for Fantasy managers. The budget pick is Puncheon, priced at 4.5 despite having already provided five assists and a goal in 10 games. Lallana is a darling of those looking at the stats and Ramirez is Southampton’s flair player with arguably the highest ceiling.
Up front, Lambert offers a decent budget pick at 6.0, with five goals and two assists in 13 games.
Gameweek 13 Captain Picks
I’m documenting whether I’m passing the test with my captain picks. If a captain pick scores over three points in the Gameweek it is considered a success and I am also noting double-digit Gameweek scores.
In the Friday Foreplay for Gameweek 13 I recommended Van Persie, Suarez, and Bale as the captain picks. In line with the Gamweek, both Van Persie and Suarez failed to fire but Bale saved my behind with a goal and bonus points to register nine points.
Quality of captain picks:
- Good captain picks: 20/39
- Double digit captains: 6/39
