Musings from Gameweek 3
Price Rises Gone Mad
Michu’s, Tevez’s, and Hazard’s prices just keep on rising. Michu and Tevez have now risen £0.8 in three Gameweeks, Hazard £0.6, and Van Persie, Fellaini, and Dyer £0.4. The game has gone crazy. I don’t know if the game designers made a subtle change to the price rise algorithm, but this doesn’t look sustainable.
Michu, Hazard, and Van Persie have now risen so much that it’s not obvious whether to get them in:
- Hazard costs £10.1 while one of last seasons’s standout performer, Silva, is on £9.9.
- Van Persie is at £13.4 while Tevez is on £9.8, Podolski on £8.4, and Torres is on £10.1. Granted, Tevez is likely the only one of that trio that is likely to score as high as Van Persie but for points per price, both Podolski and Torres could match Van Persie.
- In Michu’s price range (£7.3) you have Dyer priced at £5.9, Ben Arfa at £7.7, Nolan at £6.1, and Morrison at £6.0. These are all players that I find likely to have decent to good seasons, Fantasy wise.
If you have Michu, Tevez, and/or Hazard, keep them. I’m not arguing that they are not great players to have in your team. I’m just cautioning against always taking the obvious choice. If you were late to the party, as I was, think of the alternatives.
The Flying Dutchman
Those Fantasy managers that thought Van Persie would take some time to adjust to Manchester United’s style of play must be cursing themselves right now.
I know I am.
A hattrick and four goals in two starts is fantastic. However, another word of warning. After next Gameweek’s enticing fixture (WIG) United have Liverpool away, Tottenham at home, Newcastle away, Stoke at home, Chelsea away, and Arsenal at home. Those are damn hard fixtures.
That isn’t to say that Van Persie will not score. He was damn near untouchable last season. However, there are fewer opportunities for hattricks and double-digit Gameweeks in general from such a hard fixture list.
It’s your choice, but I am skeptical and likely not to transfer him in. Feel free to make fun of me when that blows up in my face.
Gameweek 3 saw old Fantasy favorites pop up with goals or assists. Fletcher, Nolan, Taylor, Nani, Odemwingie, Walters, Dzeko, and Ben Arfa.
Not all make great buys but most would be hard to argue against in your team.
Looking at shots and chances created Ben Arfa stands out amongst the Fantasy trio (Ban Arfa, Ba, Cisse) at Newcastle. In three games he has 2 goals in 7 shots and 8 chances created vs Ba’s 11 shots and 3 chances created and Cisse’s 6 shots and 4 chances created.
Cisse looks the worst pick of the bunch because of his £9.5 pricing. Ben Arfa and Ba, both at £7.7, look solid buys.
Gameweek 3 Captain Picks
I’m documenting whether I’m passing the test with my captain picks. If a captain pick scores over three points in the Gameweek it is considered a success and I am also noting double digit Gameweek scores.
In the Friday Foreplay for Gameweek 3 I recommended Tevez, Van Persie, and Bale as the captain picks. Bale was the dud, with both Tevez and Van Persie delivering 15 points.
Quality of captain picks:
- Good captain picks: 6/9
- Double digit captains: 3/9
